Welcome!
Learning Spanish is more than learning a second language. It is acquiring tools and cognitive skills for success. Taking this into account, and knowing that in early childhood children learn faster, at St. Mary's we have designed a Spanish curriculum starting from Prek-A to 8th grade. We give the children the opportunity to be fully bilingual during their eleven years in this
wonderful school. But at the same time we are flexible. We give support to those who join our family in any grade, and who have never had contact with Spanish. Everybody will have the same opportunity to be successful in the target language.
I am from Venezuela, as a learner and as a teacher of a second language, I can understand the challenges that this process represents in each of the stages of children's cognitive development. With small group classes, educational and fun activities, and strategies that support the development, students improve skills such as memory, mental agility and connection of ideas. Our students not only learn Spanish in its four stages: listening, speaking, reading and writing, they also improve their abilities to be successful in other subjects like Math, Science, and Social Studies. Learning Spanish they train their brains.
For me teaching these children is a blessing. My students and I really enjoy our classes. Each new topic is a challenge that we face together in a fun and efficient way. Our method is unique, because we do not teach to translate and memorize words, we teach the structure of the target language. We support our students to think in Spanish, to understand how the mechanisms of Spanish work, and to easily navigate between the structure of English and Spanish, taking their differences into account. That allows them to build their sentences and thoughts by themselves in Spanish without first thinking in English. This is why the second language acquisition process is efficient, successful, and makes them bilingual.
Our goal is for our children to be happy and for their hearts to beat in two languages.
